The Corinth Cycling Club is pleased to present the 2nd Annual Big Steamer Series. The Big Steamer Series is a pseudo-racing competition spread out over several months. In 2008 the competition will run from April 8th through October 30th. All Big Steamer rides will begin at Ronny Crownover Middle School at 5:45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rain-out notifications will be posted on the Corinth Cycling home page by 5:00pm on the day of the scheduled ride. Ride results from each ride will be posted in the club forum. The Big Steamer Championship jersey will be awarded to the rider with the most accumulated points during the entire series.
Rules & Regulations
Dates - The Big Steamer Series will run from April 8th through October 30th. Every fifth week will be considered an off week and will be easier paced ride with no points up for grabs. Keep an eye on the ride schedule.
Route - The Big Steamer is a 23 mile route that takes riders from Corinth, up into Shady Shores and back. The route is the same for every Big Steamer Series ride.
Pace - The race will be neutral for the first five miles of the ride. The race officially begins once the group crosses over I-35 onto Corinth Parkway. If you get dropped you can take a shortcut to catch back up with the group. However, you will not be eligible for points at the finish.
Points - Points are awarded on each ride to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers across the finish line. The finish line is the Visitor Parking Sign in front of Corinth City Hall on Corinth Parkway.
If someone is able to attack the group and stay away until the finish alone, that person will receive 5 Bonus points in addition to the 3 points for the win. The attack must take place before Corinth Parkway.
Safety - Please be respectful of motorists. There isn't much traffic on our BSS course and they are usually very considerate. If you approach an intersection with a vehicle stopped or approaching the intersection, make sure you stop. Blowing through intersections with traffic will not be tolerated.
Also, if you don't know the route, stay off the front until you do.
Sprinting - In many cases, the end of the race will be decided by the final sprint. The finish area is a one way, two-lane road up a slight incline that is very safe. Since it is a two-lane road, we try to stay in just the right lane. You may move into the left lane to pass if there is no approaching traffic. If there is traffic behind the group, try to stay in the right lane.
Hold Your Line - If you are involved in the sprint finish, make sure you hold you line. For example, if you are sprinting and are unable to hold the pace, don't widely swing left or right. Stay in your line and gradually slow down and let others come around you.
